Follow The Thread
Emergent curriculum lens: follow the child's thread instead of the theme calendar. October isn't about pumpkins - it's about what they're already fascinated by.
Week 1
You are here
Notice what children keep returning to unprompted this week, and just track it - no analysis yet. You can't follow a thread you haven't first documented. Keep a running list on a clipboard: three different children going back to the puddle by the fence, for instance.
Week 2
You are here
Offer one open-ended material in response to that thread, with no lesson attached. The moment you attach an expected result, it stops being their inquiry and becomes yours. For the puddle interest, and clear containers and turkey basters nearby with no explanation attached.
Week 3
You are here
Let go of a planned activity that isn't landing, and follow where the real curiosity is. A lesson plan is a hypothesis, not a mandate. If the group keeps gravitating to the puddle instead of the planned pumpkin table, pack the pumpkin away for another day.
Week 4
You are here
Reflect. What emerged that wasn't on the calendar? This is the evidence that following the child works - it's what makes emergent curriculum defensible to families, not just a feeling. Maybe "puddle week" turned into a real conversation about where water goes - write down the questions children asked.
